The City Council organizes a series of heritage routes on female characters in the history of La Laguna

They will be held on Sundays, between 15 March and 5 April, in the morning and will be free of charge

The City Council of La Laguna, through the Department of Historical Heritage, which is directed by Elvira Jorge, organizes the project ‘Heritage and Women. Female characters in the history of La Laguna’, a series of guided tours on the occasion of the celebration of International Women’s Day which is part of the joint agenda of activities organized with the various areas of the corporation in March.

Elvira Jorge explains that this is a total of four heritage routes that aim to cover certain milestones in the historic center that have in common their relationship with various female characters who starred in some episode of local history. In this way, through the route, the historical and cultural heritage serves as a thread to make known the role of women artists, intellectuals, religious or simply inhabitants of the city from different periods.

The routes are free and last approximately one and a half hours. They will be held on Sundays, between 15 March and 5 April, in the morning. They are aimed at the general public and, to participate in them, it is necessary to register through the mail patrimonioymujer@gmail.com.

The project, directed by Elisa Falcón and Luzbel Armas, allows a transversal approach to topics such as education, marriage, religion, slavery or participation in public life, and how these could affect women in a different way because of the fact that they are women. In this way, knowledge of heritage is addressed, while reflecting on the role of women in local history and recognising them as key players in forging the identity of the lagoon over the centuries.

This informative activity is part of a series of initiatives and projects that the Department of Heritage is carrying out throughout 2020, which marks the 20th anniversary of the inclusion of La Laguna on the list of UNESCO World Heritage cities. The common objective of these projects is to bring the knowledge of local history and heritage closer to diverse audiences, offering different approaches and novel approaches.
