The Historic Site of San Cristóbal de la Laguna has been declared a place of cultural interest (BIC), defined according to the Law of 1985 concerning the Historic Heritage of Spain, on December 28, 1985.

The city has had an Urban Development Plan (Plan de ordenación Urbana- POU) since 1947, completed by the General Plan of 1965. A special plan for the renovation of the historic quarter (Plan Especial de Reforma del Casco Histórico PERI) was adopted in 1977, but did not come into force until 1996.
